My 1960 Ford Truck
OK. The truck buying phase continues. I just cannot keep from buying trucks. Anyway, as with almost all truck, or car, restoration projects, you need parts for your vehicle. And with that, you have a couple of options:
Go and find a vintage Ford restoration parts supplier that specializes in NOS parts
Go to a salvage yard and take parts off old cars and trucks that scare you with their ugliness
or
Look in classified papers or any car/truck trader magazine/go around farming communities and look for old trucks that have served their time and buy the whole pickup and use all the parts off the truck that are worth it.
Well, I went with option 3. I was with my sister and friends when she was going to Elmore City. Well, on the way, I noticed a 1960 Ford F-100 just sitting out in a field by the road. To make a long story short, we stopped by and the person that lived there wasn't home, but I left a note on his door to call me if interested in selling his truck. A week later, I received a call from him and we talked and I found all the details. Here is a list of what he told me:
223 6-cylinder
3-speed No O/D
everything worked except turning signals
The motor ran
That sounded good....on the phone. I went back and loaded the pickup up on the trailer and...well, here is the real list of options
223 6-cylinder....in bad shape. Burned oil badly....Carburetor leaked...smoke comes out of carburetor....not good
3-speed transmission...good shape
things that do work:
Lights, horn, heater, motor, clutch, brakes
Things that don't work:
Light beam control, wipers, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, all instrument gauges and internal lights, speedometer, parking brake, radio
Well, I forgot to tell you something.....The previous owner (not me, and not the guy I bought it from, but the man before that) had done something to the pickup that you wouldn't expect someone to do, unless they used the truck for demolition derby. The guy had taken off the doors and cut off the top along with the back window. So the truck is a convertible. Haha, my little joke. Click on the links above to see pictures of it. Well, I also have a name for my parts truck. Whenever I refer to is, I call it the "Organ Donor". My little joke. Well, here are the pictures. Try not to scream.
And now, it seems my parts truck is haunted. I was closing up the warehouse on the night of 12/22/01, and the headlights, driver side turn signal, heater were all on. Now, keep in mind that the battery was dead this night, cause the generator drains the battery. And the wires to both turn signals are cut. How could they come on? This was freaky to me, but I just thought it was a short in the electrical system somewhere. Well, I had to go outside a second time to get the hot glue gun out of the truck barn, and it honked at me. The wires to both the horns are disconnected, I did that myself. And it honked at me! This time, I knew there was something going on. So I high tailed it to the house scared to death, and now, I don't know what to do with the truck.
