Progress
Well, Looks like all of you won't know what I did to my pickup from February 9, 2000-10/01 (2.9.00 was the exact day that my truck was pushed into the barn). I am just going to start with October and work from there, so you will have some idea. And along the way, I will say something that might of happened in the Before Time (2.9.00-now). Well, there you go.
10/01- I haven't had much time this month to work on my truck. I have band practice after school until 6, and I usually have homework of some kind. I have had marching contests every Saturday this month, so my truck, what's left of it, is still waiting to be worked on. I have, though (with the help of my father) built a sandblasting box (will get pictures later) which I will use to sandblast just about anything. I can fit fenders, doors, almost all of the hood in this box. The pictures will show just how big this monster is (I just though I would put these quotation marks in :-) ). What does this sandblasting box mean? I received, as a gift, a sandblaster! You know, if you look at it, why pay $125 just to get the frame sandblasted, when you can pay for a 100 LB sandblaster, to sandblast anything for $70 plus the cost of sand? So I am happy. I just need to finish building the box and get sand and all the head gear and hand gear and I will be ready. ANYWAY, I have also started work on the driver side door. What a site! I do have the shell of the door ready for sandblasting, maybe, except for that one little bolt that has stripped off. You know, its amazing, that when you are working on something like a door, a motor, anything with lots of bolts ( Cough, grille), there is always, always, just one bolt that will keep you away from finishing the job. I have found the bolt on the driver door. Its is on the bottom hinge that bolts to the door. Other than that, the door is completely gutted.
11/01- Well, with band practice over for the season, I have more time for my truck, hehe. More trouble I believe. LOL. Anyway, what I have I done this month......hmmmmmm. Anyway, let me get serious. The driver side door got put back against the wall...again. Although I did gut the driver side door. Then, I pulled the motor from the very far corner of the warehouse behind all the crap, and placed the motor in the barn. My original plan was to "dry" start the motor, just hook a battery and run a barrel of gas just to start the motor and see if it is "sea" worthy. LOL. Well, that didn't happen, due that the starter is frozen up so bad, and vacuum lines and fuel lines are bent and broken, so I didn't mess with it. So I kinda rebuilt the starter (WD-40 and a propane bottle to heat some stuff up, won't go into detail) and put the starter aside. I then took the carb and tried to rebuild it. I mean I could either rebuild it, or use it as a core and pay $150 for a new one. So, I went the cheap way. I disassembled the carb, and got a bucket of solvent, and cleaned the air horn, and the throttle body, and after both were nice and shiny and clean, I found a crack in the throttle body, where it bolts to the bottom piece (can't think of the name yet) so, the throttle body is useless. I took the generator off the motor, and started disassembled it partly. That's another mini-project I have to finish. Then I started the fun stuff.......SANDBLASTING!!!!!! All through the month of October and November I have be sandblasting on and off the driver side inner fender (apron) and finally got one side of it sandblasted, sanded, and primed. So one side of it looks new, and the other looks forty years old.
12/01-Merry Christmas! I didn't do much for the holidays, except I started on the driver door. It was gutted in September, so this month, I cleaned out the shop really well, and started on the door. I have been reusing the same two bags of sand since I got the sandblaster, but it seems to be holding up. Anyway, the driver door was in good shape overall, except for a few pin holes, and one large rust hole in the bottom corner. I began on the interior, sandblasting, then sanding with my orbital sander. I have been using a 120 grit sandpaper, but I might got to a yet finer grit. My camera was dead because of the batteries, so I couldn't take pictures of the interior before I sanded it top the bare metal. See Driver Side Door for all the progress pictures that I took. I also started a system on the site. Any truck part that I am not messing with at the moment is Idle. It's sitting still, not moving, alone. Any part that I am messing with, like right now the driver door, is Being Restored. And any part that is completely restored is Completed. This is system will be useful when knowing when I am working on a new sub-project. Hopefully, I should have this door on Completed status by the end of January.
1/02-Well, happy new year, and the new year brings new stuff to work on. I finsihed the prming of the door this month, and i've started sandblasting some more fenders. Sandblasting really takes a lot of time. Sorry I don't have much for this month, but I fell behind.
2/02-Janurary is over, and comes Febuary. I put the primed door on the cab this month. It bolted up just fine, and fits. I mainly bolted it to the cab to make sure the bottom lip of the door wasn't bent in or anything. I fixed a lot of the hardware inside the door. Everything was rusted out inside there, but i sandblasted it all and primed it. Now, unlike when i started this project, the door opens and closes and locks. I just found out this month that you can lock the either door from the inside by pushing the door handle down, the oppisite way of opening it, and the door will lock. News to me. I also started sanding down the front bumper. I have enough unfinsihed projects, so why not add some more. The front bumper is halfway sanded down, the the inner fender is halfway sanded down, and the outside passenger fender is halfway sanded down. I need to finish some stuff before I start anew.
